What Are 5D Number Plates?
5D number plates are the bolder sibling of 4D plates, using 5mm thick laser-cut acrylic characters instead of the standard 3mm. This extra thickness creates a more pronounced raised effect that really stands out, making them a popular choice for car enthusiasts and show vehicles.
Each character is precision-cut from solid acrylic and bonded to the plate surface, creating a clean, sharp three-dimensional appearance. The extra depth gives a premium look that turns heads on the road and at car meets.
ANPR Camera Warning
Important: 5mm 4D acrylic letters have a raised surface that may not be read correctly by Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras. If you regularly drive through tunnels or other ANPR-monitored areas (such as the Mersey Tunnels), we strongly recommend our 3mm 4D acrylic plates instead, which are fully ANPR-compatible.
If ANPR compatibility is not a concern for your vehicle usage, 5D plates offer the most striking raised appearance available.
Are 5D Plates Road Legal?
5D plates are manufactured to BS AU 145e British Standard by our DVLA-registered facility, using compliant reflective sheeting and the correct Charles Wright font with standard spacing. They meet the manufacturing standards required for road use.
However, due to the 5mm character height, some ANPR cameras may struggle to read them in certain conditions. If you need guaranteed ANPR compatibility, choose our 3mm 4D plates instead.
